Description: Frenhofer, a celebrated painter, is so frustrated by his inability to finish the canvas that was to be the culmination of his career "La Belle Noiseuse" (the beautiful annoyance)- that he has not painted in ten years. When he enlists the beautiful, fiercely independent Marianne as a model, he sees in her energy, spontaneity and creativity his last opportunity to complete his potentially greatest work.
With DIVERTIMENTO, director Jacques Rivette has created a fascinating two-hour long variation on LA BELLE NOISEUSE, his four- hour long hit from last year. This new version uses previously unseen footage and alternate takes to create a radically different perspective on the story. While Marianne is the model, she is not simply the vulnerable and malleable object of Frenhofer's gaze. She refuses to be passive; instead, she demands power, and dictates the action by effectively creating Frenhofer's vision through the force of her stunning, graceful and gritily naked poses.
